Globalization

Based on your understanding of the reading, take bulleted notes on the following:

  • The extent to which major western powers (i.e. the U.S. and Western Europe) shaped post- Cold War global trade.
  • How and why Asian economies grew in the era of globalization.
  • How and why economic trading blocs (e.g. the EU and OPEC) emerged
  • How globalization has affected culture, most specifically with Pan-Americanism.

Post-Colonial Legacies

Based on your understanding of the reading, take bulleted notes on the following:

  • How and why Mao Zedong limited democracy in his economic and political reforms.
  • How Deng Xiaoping modified Mao's policies, and its effects on democratic activism.
  • Why Indira Gandhi struggled with maintaining democracy as the Indian Prime Minister.
  • How and why Islamism emerged in the Middle East.
  • Continued problems in post-colonial sub-Saharan Africa and the attempts to address them.
  • The different political structures in Mexico and Argentina during the Cold War (e.g. single-party states vs. a democratic process.)
  • The continued legacy of colonialism and imperialistic influence in Latin America (e.g. the Dependency Theory).

Decolonization in Africa

Based on your understanding of the reading and the videos, take bulleted notes on the following:


  • Why the French granted independence to most of its African colonies, but was willing to resort to violence to maintain a hold on Algeria.
  • Compare attitudes of Algerian independence supporters to independence seekers in other regions (e.g. India, Vietnam, etc.)
  • The role of black nationalism in Ghana's independence movement.
  • How the apartheid system in South Africa affected its independence process.

Decolonization in Asia and Africa

Based on your understanding of the reading and the videos, take bulleted notes on the following:

  • The roots of independence in India, both from the British and Indian perspectives (e.g. elections in Britain, Muslim separatism, etc.)
  • The effects of newly independent Asian and African governments and their role in the Cold War (e.g. the nonalignment movement, the Vietnam war, etc.)
  • The continued role of Britain shaping middle eastern affairs (e.g. creation of Israel, Suez Crisis), and the role of Arab nationalism in the process.

Cold War's Global Effects

Based on your understanding of the reading and the videos, take bulleted notes on the following:

  • How the "fall" of China to communism led to the Korean War, and what the Korean War revealed about the plausibility of the containment theory.
  • What the Cuban Missile Crisis revealed about containing communism on the Western Hemisphere.

World War II Military and Society

Based on your understanding of the reading and the videos, take bulleted notes on the following:


  • What accounts for Germany's rapid conquering of Western Europe?
  • Why were Hitler's military tactics less successful in Russia?
  • How was the U.S. involved in the war before Pearl Harbor, and how did they help turn the tide of war in 1942 and thereafter?
  • Why did the U.S. resort to using the atomic bomb on Japan?
  • In what way did race and ethnicity play into wartime atrocities (e.g. POWs, medical experiments, genocides, etc.)
  • How did women's role in the war vary by country?

Each student will become a "specialist" regarding the questions assigned to you.  Take bulleted notes on the questions with your name in parentheses.  Please note, you may have to look earlier in chapter 33 for some of your answers:
